The Christmas Eve Tree - Delia Huddy & Emily Sutton
This wonderfully illustrated and poignant Christmas story tells the tale of an little fir tree that grew crooked and stunted, so no one wanted to buy it. A homeless boy asks the shopkeeper if he can take the tree, and down by the river in a cardboard box, decorated with a few candles, the tree finds itself at the centre of a magical Christmas Eve it will never forget.
This book gives us a lump in our throats when we read it to our kids: it gently points out the difficult times that others are going through at Christmas, while giving a message of hope that even with a tricky start in life like the little fir tree, things can turn out alright in the end. Plus, there's a good dose of magical Christmas spirit.
